We are a UK freight forwarder handling forward air carrier as a complete file. That means collection anywhere in the United Kingdom, packing or consolidation at our depot, the export declaration lodged by our own brokers, the ocean or air leg booked with a named carrier, and clearance and delivery arranged through our agent at the far end. One reference, one contact, and a written price that holds.
Pricing for forward air carrier is not arbitrary. Sea freight is sold per container or per cubic metre for groupage, air freight on chargeable weight against the airline's volumetric divisor, and road legs on distance and load factor. Once you know which of those governs your cargo, comparing quotes becomes straightforward and you can see instantly when a rate has left something out.

Planning figures for UK-origin movements. Weight, cubic measurement, commodity, destination and service level all change the price materially, and duty, tax and clearance at the far end are payable locally. Send us the dimensions, weights and destination and we will convert these bands into a fixed written quote, usually the same working day.
What forward air carrier involves
A movement of this kind runs through six stages: enquiry and rating, booking against a named vessel or flight, UK collection or delivery into our depot, export formalities, the line-haul leg, and destination clearance and delivery. Each stage carries its own paperwork and its own hard cut-off. Our job as forwarder is to hold all six together so you deal with one file rather than five suppliers.
We start with the cargo itself: what it is, its commodity code, gross and net weights, the dimensions of every piece, whether it is stackable, palletised, crated or loose, and whether anything on the packing list is restricted or hazardous. Those details decide the equipment, the rate and the declaration.
How forward air carrier is priced
Air freight is priced on chargeable weight: the airline compares actual gross weight against volume divided by 6,000 and bills whichever is greater. That is why light, bulky cargo costs more than its scale weight suggests. Rates step down at 45kg, 100kg, 300kg, 500kg and 1,000kg, so a small increase in weight can genuinely reduce the total bill.
Alongside the main freight rate sit the origin terminal handling charge, the export declaration, documentation and, at destination, terminal handling, clearance, agency fees, duty and local tax. A quote showing only the freight line is not cheaper, it is incomplete. Ours lists every element so you can compare like for like and budget accurately.
- Chargeable weight against the 6,000 volumetric divisor
- Origin terminal handling and documentation
- Export declaration, plus licences or certificates where the commodity requires them
- Marine or all-risks insurance on the declared value
- Destination terminal handling, clearance, duty and local taxes
Choosing the right service
Air freight wins whenever time is worth more than money: launch stock, spare parts holding a machine idle, perishables, pharmaceuticals and samples for a fixed deadline. Transit is two to six days airport to airport against three to seven weeks by sea, and the paperwork is lighter, but expect the freight itself to cost several times the sea equivalent.
Where the decision is genuinely close we tell you so, with the transit times, the risk profile and the total landed cost side by side. That is what a forwarder is for, and it is more useful than a single rate with no context.

Equipment, packing and consolidation
Cargo that is packed properly travels cheaply, because it stows tightly, survives handling and clears inspection without a query. We advise on the equipment before booking rather than discovering the problem when the load arrives at the depot.
- 20ft, 40ft and 40ft high cube containers for standard palletised or boxed cargo
- Flat racks and open tops for machinery, plant and out-of-gauge units
- Reefer equipment for temperature-controlled and perishable loads
- Weekly LCL consolidations for part loads and single pallets
- Export-grade crating, ISPM 15 heat-treated timber and shrink wrapping at our depot
- Air pallets, AKE containers and loose-loaded pieces built to aircraft profiles
Documents, customs and compliance
Every export needs a commercial invoice, a packing list, the correct commodity code and an export declaration. Depending on the commodity and destination you may also need a certificate of origin, an EUR1 or preference statement, a dangerous goods declaration, a phytosanitary or health certificate, a pre-shipment inspection or an import permit issued before the vessel sails. Missing any of these stops the cargo, not the paperwork.
We run our own customs brokerage, so entries are lodged and queried by the person who filed them rather than passed between offices. We hold duty deferment facilities, handle inward and outward processing where it applies, and check the documentation against the cargo before gate-in rather than after.
Transit times and what affects them
As a planning guide, air freight runs two to six days airport to airport on most trades, plus a day for UK collection and screening and one to three days for clearance and delivery at destination. Next-flight-out and hand-carry options compress that further where the deadline justifies the cost.
Port congestion, blank sailings, weather, customs inspections and public holidays all move those numbers. We book against a named vessel or flight, monitor the schedule and tell you when it slips instead of leaving you to find out from a tracking page.
What our forward air carrier service covers
Everything below is included in the written quote. Nothing is left to be arranged later or billed after the cargo has moved.
Rating & advice
Cargo measured and classified, options priced side by side, written all-in rate that holds.
UK collection
Groupage, part load or dedicated vehicle from any UK address, with tail-lift or side loader where needed.
Build-up & screening
Air-cargo screening, palletisation to aircraft profiles and AWB issued against a named flight.
Export customs
Declaration lodged by our own brokers, certificates and licences arranged where the route requires them.
Insurance
All-risks marine or transit cover on the declared value for the full door-to-door movement.
Destination clearance
Import entry, duty calculation, terminal formalities and onward delivery through our local agent.
Insurance, liability and claims
Carrier liability is limited by weight and is not insurance. Under the standard conventions a total loss can settle at a fraction of the cargo's value, which is why we arrange all-risks marine or air transit cover on the declared value for the full journey, road legs included. Cover typically costs 1.5% to 2.2% of declared value.
Condition and count are recorded at collection, again at loading and once more at delivery. That record is the difference between a claim settled in weeks and a claim that becomes an argument, and it costs nothing but a few minutes at each hand-off.
Why importers and exporters use us for forward air carrier
We are a UK freight forwarder with our own customs brokerage, a national collection network, contracted allocations with the shipping lines and airlines we use, and long-standing agents at the destinations we serve. That combination is what lets us quote the whole movement, hold the price and keep one named person accountable from booking to release.
No call-centre handovers, no resale of your enquiry to a lead network, and no headline rate that grows once the cargo is in the system. If a shipment does not make commercial sense the way you have described it, we tell you and suggest the version that does.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about forward air carrier
- How much does forward air carrier cost from the UK?
- Air freight is rated on chargeable weight, route, commodity and service level. The airline compares actual weight with volumetric weight and charges the greater figure. Send the packed dimensions, gross weight, collection postcode and destination airport for a written rate.
- How is chargeable weight calculated for forward air carrier?
- For standard air cargo, multiply length by width by height in centimetres and divide by 6,000, then compare that volumetric result with the actual gross weight. The higher figure is normally used, although courier and specialist services can apply a different divisor.
- How long does forward air carrier usually take?
- Most airport-to-airport movements take two to six days, depending on airline schedules and connections. Allow additional time for UK collection, security screening, export clearance, import clearance and final delivery. Direct and priority services are available for fixed deadlines.
- What is included in an air freight quote?
- A clear quote can include UK collection, export handling, security screening, airline freight, the air waybill, export customs entry and insurance. Destination handling, import duty, tax and final delivery are shown separately when they are not included.
- Which documents are needed for forward air carrier?
- Most shipments need a commercial invoice, packing list, shipper and consignee details, commodity codes and customs instructions. Licences, certificates of origin, health certificates or dangerous-goods declarations may also be required for particular goods or destinations.
- Can dangerous goods or lithium batteries travel by air?
- Some can, but only after correct classification, approved packing, marking, labelling, documentation and airline acceptance. Batteries, aerosols, chemicals and other regulated goods must be declared before quotation because restrictions vary by product, aircraft and destination.
- Do you arrange customs clearance for air cargo?
- Yes. We can lodge the UK export declaration and coordinate import clearance through our destination agent. Accurate values, commodity codes, origin details and consignee information must be supplied before the airline cut-off.
- Can you collect air cargo anywhere in the UK?
- Yes. We arrange collection from homes, offices, factories and warehouses throughout the UK, then deliver to the appropriate handling terminal for screening and airline acceptance. Tail-lift and timed collections can be arranged where needed.
- Is air freight insured automatically?
- Airline liability is limited and is not the same as cargo insurance. We can arrange separate all-risks cover based on the declared value for the agreed journey, subject to the policy terms and the cargo being packed appropriately.
- When should I choose air freight instead of sea freight?
- Air freight is usually the better fit for urgent, valuable, perishable or production-critical cargo. Sea freight normally costs less for heavy or bulky consignments, so we can compare both methods when delivery time and total landed cost are equally important.
